On a cool Saturday morning, the sun rose over the sports complex that is the home to the Greenville Monsters. This meant is was 90 feet down each base line, and 120 feet to the deepest part where second base usually would be. Each round, each player would get 20 swings. After the round, if there is a tie, then the players alternate swings until there is a winner.
The format was set up on a mini-whiteboard that had been moved from the locker room to the field with the bracket on it. The bracket was set by class rank as tradition had it, with the seniors deciding the matchups. There were 14 players participating in the single elimination tournament. The seeds were set as follows: 1 Cam, 2 Logan, 3 Cole, 4 Oscar, 5 Tommy, 6 Jaden, 7 Sam, 8 Tyler, 9 Jake, 10 Noah, 11 Kain, 12 Jack, 13 Tucker, and 14 Jonah
Due to the unusual number of players participating, there had to be two byes. The seniors flipped a coin to see which of the 3 would get one. Cam and Logan got the bye. After each round, they will organize the bracket so the higher seed gets the lowest remaining seed.
In the first round, the first pair to hit was Cole and Jonah. Cole managed to outslug the freshman 15-12. Next was Oscar and Tucker. Tucker struggled to find a groove, losing to Oscar 15-11. The third pairing in the first round saw Tommy catch fire and outslug Jack 19-12. As the seeds got closer, the rounds were more competitive. Kain, who was the 10 seed, beat Jaden who was the 6 10-9 after Jaden just missed tying Kain on his last swing. Sam outslugged Noah 14-11 before the final round saw Tyler and Jake go to the tiebreaker tied at 10 home runs. The pair alternated home runs before Tyler hit one well over the fence after Jayce just missed his 13th, ending the duel with Trevin winning 13-12.
For the second round, Cam and Logan would face the lowest remaining seeds. Cam went up against Kain, and ultimately won 12-10 after getting hot in his last 5 swings. Logan, not quite known for being a power hitter, did not fare well against Tyler who won comfortably 12-7. Cole was matched up against Sam in the second round. Cole even surprised himself by taking the young slugger to the tiebreaker round before ultimately losing 14-13. The final matchup of the second round saw Tommy outslug Oscar after Oscar hooked his final two swings foul, proving to be his downfall as Tommy won 15-13.
There were now just four remaining. Cam would be paired against Tyler, and Sam against Tommy. Cam ran out of luck as he couldn’t get any lift in the semi-final round, losing to Tyler 13-9. The matchup of Tommy and Sam proved to be pretty exciting, with Sam winning on his 20th swing, making the score 13-12.
In the finals, there were two underclassmen. The seniors weren’t thrilled, but the young studs were and said that they would show them how it’s done in the finals. The two delivered a spectacular battle, ending tied at 12 apiece. Since Sam was the high seed, he elected to swing last in the tiebreaker. Tyler’s ball was hit well, but on too much of a line as it clanged off the fence. Sam stepped up and smoked a line drive that appeared to be hooking foul. That was, of course, until it clanged off the “foul” pole, meaning it was a fair ball and he won 13-12. Sam, overly excited, started celebrating while the upperclassmen looked on. They decided it was time to show the underclassmen they still ruled.
After tearing down the setup, they packed everything up and returned to the locker room as the afternoon sun beat down on them. Once they got to the locker room, the seniors locked the doors without everyone else knowing, and made an announcement. They stated that there were going to be some unplanned activities. Since they did not enjoy the Home Run Derby as much as the underclassmen did, they announced that they were going to get joy in another fashion. This fashion would be a form of team bonding, where everyone got real close to their teammates.
They did agree that the winner would have his say in what happened.
