High School Elite

The next day, I waited to heat up my lunch. The principal usually did a walk through during lunch to socialize with us. He wasn’t here yet, so I continued to wait. Finally, he showed up just as Tom finished heating his food in the microwave. I got up and speed walked to casually intercept his walk back to his table as if I was going to heat up food, too, and certainly not to start a fight.

As Tom passed, I quietly and smugly said, “He’s going to be mine.”

He stopped dead in his tracks. “What did you say?”

“I said that I’ve decided Oden is going to be mine.”

Predictable Tom, in the middle of the cafeteria, in front of the principal and entire school, pushed me. I wasn’t the varsity point guard for nothing. I fell as I would in a basketball flop and shouted “Ow!” with my food spilling everywhere. Hmm, Tom?

The cafeteria went silent, and the principal rushed over to ask, “What’s going on here?”

I lifted my shirt, showing off my deeply bruised torso to everyone.

Tom, that idiot, quickly shouted, “No! That bruise isn’t from this time.”

The principal stilled. “This time?” He looked at me.

“Yeah, this isn’t the first time Tom’s hurt me.”

“Tom, my office. Now.” The principal walked towards his office, expecting Tom to follow.

Tom, however, was glued to the spot in shock. Was this the first time he’d gotten in trouble? It can’t be ignored when it’s so public, and he practically admitted his guilt in front of everyone.

He glared at me. “You did this on purpose.”

I got up and whispered in his ear, “This is just an appetizer. This my school, so you better watch yourself, Tommy.”

Where I got the balls to say that, I don’t know. And where Tom lost his balls, because he never bothered me again, I don’t know.

From the corner of my eye, I saw Xander get up, but Noah made it to me first. “Are you okay? Sit here. I’ll grab you some ice!”

I started to say, “No, it’s okay,” but he ran off.

Xander walked up and pressed the ice pack from his lunch bag against my bruise. “Nice going, sexy brain.”

I laughed at his ridiculous pet name. “Ow, don’t make me laugh! It hurts. Wait, what do you mean good job?”

“Your whole show.” He sat next to me. “You didn’t need to do all that. If you had told me, I would’ve beat the shit out of him. Saved you the trouble.”

I blushed! Why did I blush at something so violent? “You really shouldn’t do anything like that.”

He shrugged with a smirk.

I think… I needed to stay away from Xander. He made me feel… emotions I usually didn’t. He was too observant, and I was afraid I’d soon fall too deep.

……

I was sitting with the debate team at lunch, reviewing strategy, when Noah dropped a large packet in front of me and walked away.

“Uh, what is this?” It looked official. Did I need to give this to a teacher or school administration or something? I didn’t recognize it.

He turned around but kept walking backwards.

“Noah! What is this?”

When he had almost made it back to where he was sitting at all the way at the end of the other cafeteria, he shouted, “It’s my formal application to be your boyfriend again!”

There were some whistles thrown out and more than a few laughs.

“Omg, Dylan, I’ve never seen you blush before!” One of my teammates said next to me.

He had made a packet of our memories together over the years. I did notice they were his favorite memories and not my favorites per se, even though I had told him before. And a lot of the photos were centered around him, like of me kissing him or leaning into him, and none of the reverse, but still very cute.

So, a few days later, I was back with Noah. Since our break up, he had been nothing but nice. He said he had made a mistake by letting me go and that he still was waiting until marriage but that he thought about what I said and he would change other things about our relationship. Objectively, I knew Noah was better for me than Xander (not that I was even considering him, right?).

Noah started putting his arm around me and holding my hand and doing more cute PDA things I had craved before. His touch didn’t give me butterflies like they used to, but I appreciated his effort.

And Xander was getting harder and harder to resist lately. I thought if I have a boyfriend, Xander might back down a little. I was starting to get breathless every time he got in my personal space. It wasn’t healthy. And Noah was so nice. And he’s really attractive, too! I mean, not too, just attractive period. Totally my type. He’s always been my type.

As we lounged in the courtyard between classes, my eyes strayed to Xander. It was as if he felt my gaze, because he instantly looked up and connected with me. He gave me a knowing smile. I looked away.

Noah put his arm around me, and even fed me a bite of cookie he was snacking on! Cute!

But I was still distracted thinking about Xander’s look.

……

“So how did Noah handle it when you told him I took your virginity?”

I jumped! “Ugh, Alexander, don’t sneak up on me like that.”

“Oh, I’m back to being Alexander, am I?”

I rolled my eyes and looked away.

He grinned. “You didn’t tell him it was me, did you?”

I kept trying to ignore him.

“Oh shit, you didn’t tell him at all!” His smile widened. “What? You’re going to pretend you’re a virgin when that prude finally attempts to make you feel good? You know you’re not that good of an actor.”

“Noah makes me feel plenty good, and, actually, he doesn’t believe in sex until marriage.”

Xander, I mean Alexander, burst out laughing. “That’s golden. Typical for the golden boy. You know where to find me when that gets old, sugar snap.”

He leaned in and kissed my cheek, slowly and sensually. My breath caught. He pulled back to stare into my eyes. I almost got lost in them. Almost.

I wiped my cheek. “Gross. Now get out of my way, Alexander. I have things to do.”

He laughed and walked away.

I’d forget about him soon, right?
