The room was kind of a mess, their strewn clothes notwithstanding. There were more clothes piled into a corner; it was only on the second look that he realized there was a hamper under there. Three chairs were clustered by the window, boxes stacked on the seats. One wall had a built-in bookshelf that was completely full. The spines were brightly colored and curiosity got the better of Sam.
They were cookbooks. All of them.
He wouldn’t have thought so many books on desserts could exist. There was a three-volume set devoted to pumpkin breads. He couldn’t help but smile. Thomas hadn’t been kidding.
Sam reached for another one. It had lots of pictures of metallic things the book insisted were edible, and Sam got so caught up in trying to figure that out that he didn’t hear the door open.
“It must be my birthday. There’s a naked blond guy who loves blowjobs reading cookbooks in my bedroom.”
Thomas was standing there giving him a once-over. He snapped the book shut, holding it over his crotch.
“Smooth,” Thomas said, strolling over. He was wearing plaid pajama pants. “I think it’s too late to be shy, though.”
It was true. Sam had spent two hours crying naked in his arms, for fuck’s sake. He sighed, placing the book in Thomas’s outstretched hand. Thomas gave Sam’s body a five-second examination before opening it with a smile.
“So you like the shiny stuff, eh?” Sam couldn’t believe he didn’t want to discuss whatever the fuck was happening between them, but he wasn’t gonna look a gift horse in the mouth. “Figures.”
Sam wasn’t sure what he meant by that.
“Can you really eat that shit?”
“Shit?” Thomas was staring at him with open affection and Sam didn’t know how to handle it. Thank god he kept talking. “This is not shit.”
“It looks like it’s covered in mercury.” He smiled; it was the first time in weeks he didn’t feel like he was about to lose his mind. “Or whatever Alex Mack turned into in that show.”
Thomas laughed, a real and genuine sound that made Sam want to pull him in for a kiss. He closed the book and held it to his chest. “You know what? Today’s your lucky day.”
He turned and walked out the door, and Sam followed, trying not to seem too eager. The hallway light was brighter than the bedroom lamp; he squinted until his eyes adjusted. Thomas was opening another bedroom door in front of them.
“What’s this?”
The door swung open. It was a pretty large bedroom; clearly the master with the walk-in closet and the bathroom to their right. He followed Thomas inside, looking around.
There were tables along one wall, covered in molds and pans and boxes of fondant. Two full-size refrigerators stood in one corner, and kitchen cabinets had been mounted to the wall above the tables. There were some chairs, an old jukebox, and an ultramodern TV mounted to the wall. Thomas spread his arms and grinned.
“Ta-da!”
Sam laughed, sitting in one of the chairs. The plastic was very cold on his bare ass, but he knew it would warm up. “What’s all this?”
“This,” Thomas said, bending over to open a fridge, “is where the magic happens.”
He pulled out a cookie sheet with a dozen small white domes on it. Sam took a closer look when he set them on the table. He saw that they were bell-shaped and started to reach out and touch one. Thomas swatted at his hand, and not gently, either.
“Don’t touch the magic.” He pulled up a chair across from Sam. “Just watch it.”
“Sorry, Cake Boss. Jeez.”
Thomas reached into one of the cabinets and pulled out boxes and bottles. Sam couldn’t make heads or tails of most of it, but —
“Get that look off your face,” Thomas said. “This is for the magic.”
It was a bottle of Absolut, and Sam sure could use a taste. But Thomas was distracting him, trying to make him happy. He knew that, even if it scared him to admit it.
Had anyone had ever tried to make him happy? Would he have allowed it?
Thomas was pouring gray powder into the cap of the Absolut bottle.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Thomas shushed him and picked up a small paintbrush. He poured the tiniest bit of Absolut into the cap with the powder and stirred it with the brush. It immediately turned silver, and Sam actually gasped.
“See?” He beamed with pride. “Magic.”
He painted it onto the top of one of the bell-things. The color took immediately, but he could still see the white underneath.
“It’ll take a few coats.” Thomas picked up the bell and started to paint the side. “Then it’ll shine like a new penny.”
Sam shook his head. “Okay, what the fuck, man?”
“It’s a metallic powder.” He was trying to sound exasperated, but Sa knew he was enjoying himself. “The alcohol will evaporate fast, unlike water, and then — ”
“No, not the fucking paint.” Sam crossed his arms and leaned in, holding Thomas’s gaze. “That mind reading shit? What is that?”
Thomas actually looked bashful. “It’s not mind reading. Lots of smartasses like to tell me they can still see the white under — ”
“It’s not just that.” Sam didn’t bother to hide how impressed he was. “You just…earlier, knew exactly what to do to help me calm down. The stuff about my mom, too. And then the…”
He was blushing furiously, but he was going to get some answers, damn it. “That. You knew, somehow. What I wanted. What would happen.”
Thomas was getting mischievous again, rubbing his fool along Sam’s bare calf. “It was obvious how bad you wanted it.”
Sam saw that he wasn’t the only one using sex to avoid things. “Don’t even start that. Answer — when did you discover your powers?”
The smile was still there, but it was losing wattage. Thomas finished painting the bell in his hand and started on another one.
“I…” He seemed unsure; it was a weird look on Thomas. “There was this guy.”
“A wizard?”
Thomas kicked him in the shin.
“We were together for a few years. He was really sensitive, you know?” He spun the bell, dipping the brush back into the paint. “It was easy to hurt his feelings.”
